Topic 1 Post: Shane, Ace, Tyler S.

During the years of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, there were many ways that the men and women spent their days. Drinking and smoking was a big part of how adults occupied their free time. One of the most popular things to do as an adult or teen was to go to a friend’s house and party with your neighbors and do the ‘swing’, which was a popular dance at the time.  If you didn’t feel like going out to party you could go to the movies with your family. Back in this time the average price for a movie ticket was 49 cents.

Toys that were invented for children included toys such as the Tonka truck, silly putty, Candy Land, and chutes and ladders.

If you were to compare how much people made back then to now, it wouldn’t seem like that much but really you’re almost making around the same. For example, the gas price back in the early 1950’s was 17 cents. Now, that hardly seems like anything but back then the median income for a family was only around $2950. If you wanted things such as a car or a house for your family, the cost would total to $7450 for a house and $1420 for a car.

These days’ children everywhere are constantly depending on their smart phones, ipods, and video gaming systems to keep them entertained. And very rarely do we enjoy these things with our parents and other immediate family. However, back in the days of the 1940’s to 1950’s children listened to their radios with their family for a short while, before going outside and enjoying life outside the walls of their bedrooms.

    I find it interesting that toys that are still kid's favorite games were made in 1949. They would go and party with some swing music with their friends? Sounds fun!

    i wish kids still played board games ... now a days, they only play their xbox and ipads. candy land was a fun game!

    i used to play a lot of those games when i was little and even now my 11 year old sister doesn't know what chutes and ladders was. its so weird how spending time changed over the years

    Ipods and cell phones....technology in general...SUCKS.
    i remember when everyone was happy with going outside and playing kickball. Now the only thing everyone wants to do is facebook and play video games....

    i love how they still make canyland and silly putty. when the children play those games it must bring back memories for the parents to when they played it. btw this is AJ not alina again

    Man $0.17 a gallon for gas would be AWESOME!! I am sure everyone would agree with me on that. Wouldn't parting get old if you did the same thing all the time? Movies is another thing that would great if tickets were a lower price I mean I have not been to a movie that I have enjoyed seeing since The blind side came out like a year or so ago...shows that I do not go to movies but like think about it, tickets are like $9 at night plus any food which is outrageous. Man how times have changed.

    It's strange to think that back then they didn't have cell phones, laptops, and ipods. Most of us don't sit back and think about what the world would be like if we didn't have these inventions.

    How could single women survive at this time without having additional income? That would be an interesting topic of discussion. It does seem like thriving is unrealistic unless there are two people pooling their resources. Income has come a long way, but also things were a lot cheaper then as well. If you think about it: you could buy a meal for about 50 cents and a gallon of gas was about 30 cents, now a meal on average is about $5.00 to $15, depending on where you eat, and gas is $3.59 and rising! What a difference.

    I wish todays life was like back then, the gas prices especially!!!
